Cornerstone Mission Liberia Medical and School Mission Team-February -April 2014

After months (and years for some) of dreaming of this day, the mission team is ready, set and let’s go to Liberia! Even though the rainy season in Liberia caused a postponement of the Cornerstone Mission trip that was planned for November 2013, the spirits of the mission team were not dampened. They continued to believe God that their lifelong dream of a mission’s trip would be fulfilled. And those dreams are about to realized. Two teams will be leaving in February and March 2014 for Workpeh Town, Liberia. Praise the Lord!

Another milestone of this ministry was that the first meeting of the Cornerstone Mission Liberia met on Saturday, September 21, 2013, at the home of Pastor

Dorothy Langstaff. The meeting was led by me  for the purpose of planning a successful mission trip. The meeting was attended by eight of the nine members. Those attending included: Kathy Allen, Recorder; Jan Chapman,  Pastor Lois Fowler, Dr. Cheryl Hansen, Maureen Hexum, Tracy Hoff, Pastor Dorothy Langstaff, Deana Osgood and myself. Absent was Dr. Kim Straub.

Team I (the School Team): Will leave for Workpeh Town, Liberia February 11 and return February 26, 2014. The team consists of Annetta (Team Leader), Deana Osgood, Pastor Lois Fowler and Maureen Hexum. Deana  and Maureen Hexum will be helping teachers at the Cornerstone AG Mission School with new school curriculum. Pastor Lois Fowler is pastor of the Fairview Covenant Church in Mound, Minnesota and will be part of a three-day revival service that will be held February 13-15th, 2014; she will also be guest speaker for the dedication of the school.

Team II (the Medical Team): Will leave for Workpeh Town, Liberia March 18 and return April 2, 2014. The team consists of Annetta (Team Leader), Dr. Cheryl Hansen, Dr. Kim Straub, Jan Chapman and Tracy Hoff. Dr. Cheryl Hansen is a retired OB/GYN doctor and Dr. Kim Straub is a family practice doctor. Jan and Tracy will be assistants to Dr. Hansen and Dr. Straub, helping in anyway needed to serve the medical needs of the people.

Hard Work/Dedication of Team Members:
Both Dr. Hansen and Dr. Straub have been collecting medical supplies for Workpeh Town for months. Some of the items that have been donated and shipped include a medical bed (worth at least $5,000), a scale, blood pressure cuffs, surgical supplies and many more items too numerous to list. Both doctors will do hands on training for nurses, nursing assistants, and mid-wives. Currently, the nearest medical clinic is 70 miles away. The new medical clinic (and the school) should be completed and ready for use by February, 2014. What a wonderful opportunity to minister and share the love of Jesus.

Deana, Jan, Pastor Lois Tracy And myself have worked many long and hard hours to collect items needed for the school and the

medical clinic. Tracy and her husband, Gary, opened their home to store the 32 wardrobe (U-Haul) boxes that needed to be filled. Try to imagine your living room, dining room, basement, and garage filled to overflowing with stuff and boxes to be shipped to Liberia. Gary also collected bikes, repaired and restored them to working order. A lot of other people came to help sort and put all of that “stuff” into the boxes for shipping. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! Matthew 10:42 (NIV): “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.”

Remember, that we need to begin to prepare our hearts and minds for the Workpeh Town, Liberia, mission trip. It is exciting to see how God has called together all those people with the skills and talents that God will use for his glory and to help the people of Workpeh Town. READY, SET, LET’S GO!!!!!

DESPITE ENEMY OPPOSITION, GROUNDBREAKING

0913130026Hello everyone, I know it has been a long time waiting for this post.

Well, the historic groundbreaking ceremony for Cornerstone Assembly of God Mission School in Workpeh Town, Liberia was held on August 3rd, 2013, but not without some direct opposition from our “arch enemy”

Satan. Everything from banking problems, no chairs, fines, and possible “no shows” were some of the plans Satan used to try to bring discouragement and thwart the groundbreaking ceremony. We have a few examples of what the enemy tried to do (but of course failed): • When we went to withdraw money from Western Union, we could not withdraw it because of a technical problem. The money was there but we could not take it out. We prayed, God answered and we were able to get our money the Friday before the groundbreaking. Talk about God’s perfect timing! Victory for us, defeat for the enemy! • The week before the groundbreaking ceremony, we went to the Town Hall in District 1 to borrow chairs for the people to sit on. We thought everything in that department was all set. Except on the Friday before the ceremony, we found out that someone else had already reserved the chairs! “Now, how could that have happened?” we wondered. (Our “arch enemy” is at it again.) In spite of this, we were able to borrow chairs from the General Superintendent of the Assembly of God Church. Praise God for his provision of these much needed chairs. Victory for us, defeat for the enemy! • Then, on the way to the groundbreaking, the police pulled us over because we had too many chairs on top of the car! Can you believe it? We were fined $40 (American dollars) and we were thankful for that because originally the fine started out to be $200 (American dollars). Victory for us, defeat for the enemy! • The groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. At 10:30, no shows, around 11:00, ten people arrived. We were so nervous that no one would be attending and we had prepared a lot of food. At 2 o’clock, people started arriving from the east, west, north and south. The people came from Districts 4 and 5 and had walked at least 35 miles. These wonderful people left the day before in order to make it to our groundbreaking celebration. Victory for us, defeat for the enemy!

Now, to share “the rest of the story” with all of you and God’s faithfulness to the Cornerstone Mission in Liberia. We had prepared lots of food for the Groundbreaking Celebration. The Town Elders gave us a goat as a way to provide extra meat for the people to eat. We made goat stew, traditional collard greens, rice and fried chicken. We were ready to feed a large crowd. That is why we were so nervous when we thought there would be “no shows” on the day of the celebration. We had planned to feed about 150 people and instead we fed 400 people. That goat helped to feed those extra people. Thank you, Lord, for your provision. There was a soccer match by the villagers for the groundbreaking celebration. And our “arch enemy” was up to his tricks again. No pictures could be taken because the phone cord had been stolen. And, also the praise and worship leader got sick the day before the celebration, so we had to pay an extra $50.00 for another worship leader.

The General Superintendent of the Assemblies of God, Jimmy Kuoh, was the keynote speaker and delivered an outstanding message. Other dignitaries included Speaker of the House, Han Barchue. The Honorable Gbehzohngar M. Findley who is the Senior Senator, Grand Bassa County, President Pro-tempore, also attended the celebration. Then God really blessed the groundbreaking celebration with gifts to help build the school and the medical clinic: 1. The Pro-tempore gave 100 bags of cement ($10 per bag); 2. Han Barchue did not want to be outbid so he gave 136 bags of cement; 3. Senator Nyonblee Karnga-Lawrence for Grand Bassa County gave another 35 bags of cement Enough bags of cement were donated to build the school and the medical clinic. Praise the Lord for his faithfulness. And then the President Pro-tempore inquired as to any other needs of the Cornerstone Mission. As of this writing, we are praying and seeking the Lord about our future needs. “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. Now to our God and Father be glory forever and ever. Amen.” Philippians 4:19-20
